Born in a lockdown. Built for the long haul.

In the spring of 2020, as COVID-19 shuttered storefronts and emptied streets across Austin, serial entrepreneur Cecilia Rose watched the small business community she loved begin to fracture. Owners were isolated, revenue had vanished overnight, and the usual networks — the handshakes, the coffee meetings, the chamber events — had all gone silent.

Cecilia had spent years connecting Texas entrepreneurs with investors through the Texas Entrepreneur Network, so she understood better than most how much small businesses depend on relationships to survive. She couldn't fix the pandemic. But she could build a space where owners could still find each other.

She launched SMBATX as an online community — a place where Austin-area entrepreneurs and small business owners could share resources, ask hard questions, refer each other business, and simply not feel alone. No pitch decks. No gatekeeping. Just real owners helping real owners get through an impossible year.

The response was immediate. Hundreds of Austin business owners joined within the first few months. They shared PPP loan guidance, covered each other's social media, sent customers to one another's delivery windows, and held each other accountable when giving up felt easier than pushing forward.

When the city began to reopen, the community didn't dissolve — it deepened. Members who had only ever met on a screen started showing up to in-person events, workshops, and roundtables. What started as a lifeline became a permanent fixture of Austin's small business landscape.

Today SMBATX runs programming across Austin and central Texas, serves members in 12 cities, and continues to be guided by the same principle Cecilia started with in 2020: that small businesses are stronger together than they ever could be alone.
